Stockland came into being in 1952 when a young Hungarian immigrant and entrepreneurial architect called Ervin Graf built a housing estate on a former poultry farm in Sefton, NSW. From the start, the company’s mission was to make a “worthwhile contribution to the development of our cities and great country”. By 1957 Stockland had listed on the Australian Stock Exchange and was already beginning to diversify by building retail projects throughout suburban Sydney.

The company’s charitable trust – the Stockland CARE Foundation – delivers infrastructure and initiatives that improve the wellbeing of communities residing in and around the properties it owns. Stockland also has a Reconciliation Action Plan, a community grants program and has partnered with the likes of Conservation Volunteers Australia, Good2Give, Jamie’s Ministry of Food and The Big Issue. All staff get two days paid volunteering leave a year.
Stockland also provides the $12,000 Ervin Graf Scholarship (for high-performing property undergraduates), the Stepping Into program (paid internships for undergraduates with a disability) and the Lucy Program (a leadership program for female undergraduates studying business, finance, accounting and law).
As would be expected, Stockland is mainly interested in grads from disciplines such as finance, HR, marketing and property/project management. The company looks for candidates who are ambitious, passionate, respectful of others and keen to make a difference through the work they perform.
The recruitment process starts with an online application. This is reviewed by a HR staffer, who will get in touch if your qualifications and experience are deemed suitable. At this stage, you can expect to do a 10-20-minute video interview, during which your application will be discussed in detail. If that goes well, you will be invited to complete an online psychological assessment. After which candidates are identified to proceed to interview. This includes 2-3 interviews with ‘Stockland Stakeholders’ (i.e. your potential manager, future colleagues and HR staff). A comprehensive background check is undertaken before an offer is made.

The Graduate Program runs for two years. Upon successful completion of the program, you may be offered a permanent role.
You can expect to start on somewhere around $67,500, with the prospect of cracking six figures within a few years if you perform well. You’ll be able to access an employee share plan and short-term incentive program. There is also the option of purchasing additional leave.
Stockland staff are provided with training and development programs, on-the-job experience, mentoring and support for continuing education. Stockland’s performance-management process requires managers to provide ongoing coaching to those on their team. The company facilitates internal promotions and transfers across business units and supports the development of technical expertise, interpersonal skills, management and leadership capability.
Property developers aren’t typically held in the highest esteem by Australians but Stockland is the exception.
