What's your job about?
As a graduate we have the opportunity to work in a variety of areas such as: Workers Insurance, Lifetime Care, Strategy and Office of the CEO.
My first rotation has been in the Commercial Engagement and Performance Team of Workers Insurance. The Workers Insurance Scheme of NSW is going through the largest changes in its 30 year history so it’s super busy, but the exposure I’ve had has been invaluable. A highlight for me has been developing an actions & initiatives tracker for customer experience monitoring (and then presenting it to the Executive General Manager of Workers Insurance).
What's your background?
I was born in Sydney and have spent my whole life here. My journey into University was a bit of a different one to most. After entering the workforce straight out of school I decided at the age of 25 it was time for a career change - aimed at the corporate world I decided to enrol myself into uni as a ‘mature aged’ student.
During my time at uni I spent a few of my holidays volunteering in animal refuges and working on a number of community projects in South East Asia. I guess this is where I started to get a feel where I wanted to take my career. These experiences showed me that in order for these projects to remain viable and continue helping people; they have to have someone that has both business acumen and a desire to help people – cue icare!
Nearing the pointy end of my degree I began the grad position online application dance and came across the icare program. Two things told me it was the organisation for me; the commercial heart and social mind mantra and the question ‘When did you last do something that took courage?’ – I thought spending two weeks building pig pens for Cambodian hill tribes on the Cambodian-Vietnamese border had to be up there! I’ve now been here for 4 months and love it!
Could someone with a different background do your job?
Absolutely! The great thing about icare is that you get to use the skills you learned at uni (and in life in general) in a broad sense. Being able to think and innovate on the fly are definitely skills that help as well. I think limiting your career ideas to roles directly related to your area of study locks you out of so many potential paths you may never have known existed – ones you may even love!
What's the coolest thing about your job?
The coolest thing about my job is knowing that what I am working on actually impacts the lives of people in NSW. Working in the Commercial Engagement and Performance team has allowed me to work collaboratively with a number of insurance companies in NSW to develop a more customer centric service. I’d also have to say seeing a program that I co-created in a board paper was definitely a highlight so far.
What are the limitations of your job?
For me I guess a limitation is moving on after 6 months in each rotation. Once you get settled in and really start to get a feel for the role it’s time to move on. But on the other side of the coin having the chance to experience other work in 4 different areas within 2 years is definitely an advantage, especially so early on in your career. Also not having specialist knowledge makes the learning curve a bit steeper – key point is realising there is absolutely no stupid questions.
