What did you study? When did you graduate?
I studied commerce at Deakin University. I graduated in 2018.
What is your job about?
I am currently working in the Small Appliance Department at Harvey Norman Preston. This role includes stock ordering, customer service, people management, and returns. The team will share different responsibilities throughout the day and we work towards creating a pleasurable shopping experience for consumers.
The day will start off with looking at current stock levels and following up on orders. I will then look to merchandise the department and ensure ticketing standards are up to date. Customer service is always the main priority so that will consume most of the day.
What is your background?
I grew up in a country town named Myrtleford in North East Victoria. I spent 19 years there attending and completing school in the town. I made the big jump to Melbourne for University when I was 19 and have lived here since. My University experience was fantastic and has given me the grounding for the role I am currently in. I have worked casually and full time in various jobs since the age of 15 which I believe is a reason why I am currently in the role I am now.
In 2018 I applied online for the Harvey Norman Graduate Opportunity and went through various interviews before being accepted into the position.
Could someone with a different background do your job?
Yes, retail is all about being a people person who isn’t afraid to put themselves out of their comfort zone. If you can put up with the good and bad of people then retail could be a good job for you.
What is the coolest thing about your job?
The thing I enjoy most about my job is working with people and not sitting down at a desk. I originally thought my future would be in an office at a desk but I’m very happy I chose to come into retail.
What are the limitations of your job?
Working weekends can be socially draining but I learned to work around it and appreciate the job I have. It can also be stressful when dealing with difficult customers.
