Kathryn Wilkin

I have a strong belief that early intervention is integral to a well-functioning health system and for this reason, I would love to work in the community and help to decrease poor health outcomes by working from the ground level up.

My name is Kathryn Wilkin and I am currently studying the Graduate Certificate of Nursing (Re-Entry) at CQU. Having been out of the nursing profession for 5 years, I was keen to find a course that would adequately support my transition back into the workplace. The Graduate Certificate of Nursing (Re-Entry) is the perfect way to do this, as it offers me a chance to study in a safe environment among colleagues and revisit areas of nursing that have changed or that may need refreshing. The units of study available to me will give me a boost in my future career as a nurse.

I have always considered it an honour to have the opportunity, as we do as nurses, to have a positive impact on someone's life, often at a time when they are at their most vulnerable. I have really enjoyed my postgraduate study so far as it has reignited my passion for my career. Once more I am amazed at the amount of knowledge and the unique skill set that a nurse carries around with them in their day to day work - it really is unlike any other job in the world. This postgraduate study is integral to my re-entry into the work place, as nursing is constantly changing and evolving and abiding by current practice standards is essential to providing safe and effective care. I hope to polish my skills and consolidate my newly acquired knowledge in order to provide the best care possible to my patients.

I have many ideas about what I would like to do once I have completed my postgraduate studies. The opportunities in nursing are endless, and there are many paths to choose from. However, my passion lies in child and maternal health nursing. I would love to explore these areas of nursing further and possibly work in a rural or remote setting, once I feel I am competent enough to do so. I would love to complete more postgraduate study in order to strengthen my knowledge in this area, I don't think you can ever really stop learning and exploring in nursing. I have a strong belief that early intervention is integral to a well-functioning health system and for this reason, I would love to work in the community and help to decrease poor health outcomes by working from the ground level up.
